Backpacking + T1D

Backpacking season is coming to a close as the chillier air is bringing ski, snowshoe, and ice climbing season ❄️

😌 Prep! Know what you have and review it before hitting the trails. This will not only ensure you have what you need but give some peace of mind.
🍬Pack double the glucose. Never know if you may have to spend more time outdoors because of weather, longer than anticipated trail, etc.
💉 Back up supplies. Always bring a vial of insulin and syringe or pen in case of a pump malfunction. Higher blood glucose over a long period of time can be just as dangerous as low blood glucose.
💧 Gatorade sips along the way instead of all water. Get powdered Gatorade and dilute it to your liking to get some extra carbs as you hike.
🥪 Fuel! Fuel as you go- better to stop and fuel than power through and feel drained by the end. Combo of protein & carbs is always recommended.
🫧 Dehydration can cause false increased (high) BGs on a sensor.
Why ⁉️ Less water = blood sugar is more concentrated & sensors read the interstitial fluid.
Stay hydrated!
🧠 Mentally- trust yourself and your prep. You put in a lot of time to do this & enjoy the views.

📒 Notable:

Always remember the 10 essentials!
Often T1D becomes distracting to packing and consuming versus remembering there are other items to remember too!
